Learning Journey to Kampong Glam
Monday, March 13, 2006

We ended our term 1 with a field trip to Kampong Glam. The long-awaited trip is finally here. The pupils were looking forward to this trip as they just love to go on field trips, away from school and books and of course having a fun time outside with their friends. But most importantly, its what they brought home, the learning points, from the trip that matter most... Well kids, here are the pictures that you've been asking for....

All the P4 pupils assembled in the hall waiting for the arrival of the tour guides to conduct the briefing.

The pupils all geared up for the bus ride to the Kampong Glam. Kampong Glam...here we come!

It was an activity-based trip as the pupils had to answer some questions on a worksheet pertaining to the Kampong Glam.

Finally we had arrived. The place is situated along Arab Street. We had a few places to visit.

Our first stop: The Majestic Sultan Mosque

The pupils had a chance to step into this historical mosque and admired the interior architectural structure of the building.

Second stop: Shops along the alley of Arab Street. Here, the pupils were tasked to 'shop' for things which could be found commonly in these rows of shops like tops (gasing), sarongs, songkoks etc.

Third stop: The Historic Istana Kampong Glam

Here the pupils had a chance to have a closer view of a Bugis perahu (small boat).

Our dearest Patrick topped in both subjects; English and Science, scoring 92 marks and 94 marks respectively for the two subjects.

Yuan Jie and Olivia topped in Mathematics by scoring full marks!
Congratulations to the three students. You guys have done very well for this CA1. For the rest of the pupils, nothing is impossible. With sheer determination and hard work, I'm very confident you can excel like them too.

CA 1 Results
Wednesday, March 08, 2006

Dear Parents, CA 1 papers have been released to the pupils for them to bring home and show the papers to the parents. In overall, the pupils have done relatively well but I strongly believed that our kids have the potential to achieve better grades. Each pupil was also given an individual report slip indicating how they had performed for this CA 1. I've also included some general comments on their behaviour and their daily work performance. In this entry, I've included the analysis of this CA 1 and their performance as a class. Kindly have a look at the bar graphs below indicating their performance for each subject.

I'm very proud of the pupils as they had done very well for Mathematics. We have 20 Band 1 and 2 altogether. For the weaker ones, remediation will be carried out immediately when the new term starts. Any pupil who scored lesser than 60 marks for any of the 3 subjects (English, Math or Science) is required to attend remedial lesson. Remedial lesson will be conducted on every Monday from 1.30-2.30 p.m. with effective from week 2 of term 2. Consent forms will be distributed to the affected pupils on the first week of the new term. I hope parents will take this March holiday as an opportunity to gear up your child for the new term and revises with them on term 1 topics which they are weak at. As for me, I will try my very best to guide the kids and prepare them early for their first major exam for this year which is the SA 1. Lastly but not least, have a happy holiday to all my pupils. Have a good break and let's start the new term with a bang!

A Fun-based English Lesson
Sunday, March 05, 2006

In NIE, we were taught the different strategies to suit the different learning styles of our pupils. One of the most successful and effective strategies is the hands-on method whereby pupils get to do a fun-based hands-on activity which is in-line with the main objective of the lesson. So for this particular lesson, pupils were taught the strategy on completing an open-ended cloze passage. For this lesson, I chose a cloze passage on the topic Origami. But before we got into the proper lesson, the kids got to do an Origami activity in the AVA Room.

I led them step by step during the Origami activity using the visualiser

After doing the hands-on activity, pupils have gained some background knowledge on the activity Origami and based on that experiential knowledge, they somehow could apply that knowledge to solve the cloze passage pertaining to Origami.

Pupils worked in small groups to solve and complete the cloze passages.
